Lightning Safety: How to Protect Your Family

Lightning is constant, and most of its damage never makes the news. Here’s what keeps your family and your home safe when storms roll in.

When thunder roars, go indoors. Lightning can strike more than 10 miles from the rain, so there is no safe place outside during a storm. Get into a substantial building or a hard-topped vehicle, stay off corded electronics and plumbing, and wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before heading back out. How dangerous is lightning, really?

Lightning has an image problem. Because it kills relatively few people, it’s easy to file away as a freak event. But lightning is not rare at all. The U.S. is hit by about 25 million lightning flashes in an average year, and most of the harm it does never shows up in the fatality count.4

Most of that damage lands on property. In a typical year lightning starts roughly 24,600 fires in the U.S., and in 2025 it drove an estimated $1.65 billion in home-insurance claims, with the average paid claim topping $26,000. A single strike can surge through your wiring and fry every plugged-in device, ignite an attic or roof, or knock out HVAC and well pumps. Lightning is also behind the biggest wildfires: it starts only a minority of U.S. wildfires but accounts for more than half of all the acreage that burns.5

The threat to people is smaller but very real. Lightning still kills about 20 Americans and injures hundreds more every year, and many survivors live with lasting neurological effects. Nearly all of it is avoidable if you know when a storm is close. The biggest myth is that you’re safe as long as it isn’t raining where you are. Lightning routinely strikes 10 miles or more from the storm, the “bolt from the blue.” If you can hear thunder, you’re already within striking distance.6

It’s not spread evenly, either. Florida is the most lightning-prone state in the country, with the Tampa and Orlando, Florida areas sitting in the strike-heavy corridor known as Lightning Alley, and the Gulf Coast and Deep South, from Houston, Texas to New Orleans, Louisiana, see far more lightning than the national average. Texas, by sheer size, records the most strikes of any state overall.

The rules that keep your family safe

The guidance from the National Weather Service is simple and worth teaching everyone in your household:

  • When thunder roars, go indoors: Head to a substantial building or a hard-topped vehicle at the first rumble.
  • Wait it out: Stay inside until 30 minutes after the last thunder you hear.
  • Avoid conductors: Stay off corded phones and wired electronics, and don’t shower or use plumbing during a storm.
  • No safe shelter outside: Trees, sheds, and open shelters do not protect you; get to a real building.

The five ways lightning actually reaches a person

Almost everyone pictures the same thing: a bolt comes down and hits someone. That does happen, and it is the rarest version. The National Weather Service catalogues five separate mechanisms, and knowing which ones do the damage changes what counts as a safe place to stand.

A direct strike means the person becomes part of the main lightning channel. A side flash happens when lightning hits something taller nearby and part of the current jumps across to you, which is precisely what a tree does to the person sheltering under it. Streamers form as the downward leader approaches the ground, and someone who happens to be part of one can be killed or injured even though the main bolt connected somewhere else.7

Conduction is the indoor one. Lightning travels long distances through wires and metal surfaces, and as the NWS puts it, metal does not attract lightning but it does provide a path for lightning to follow. That is the entire reason for the rules about corded phones and plumbing, which otherwise sound like superstition.7

The one that matters most is the one nobody names. When lightning strikes a tree or any other object, much of the energy travels outward from the strike in and along the ground surface, and this ground current causes the most lightning deaths and injuries of any mechanism. It affects a far larger area than a direct hit ever could.7

Sit with that for a moment, because it rearranges the mental picture entirely. The dangerous thing is not being the tallest object around. It is being anywhere near whatever the tallest object was, standing on ground that is now carrying current outward in every direction. Being close is the risk. Being hit is a subset of it.

Five ways a strike reaches a person

Current travels through wires and plumbing into a building. The reason for the rules about corded phones and showers.

Ground current

Energy travels outward along the ground surface from the strike. It covers by far the largest area and causes the most deaths and injuries of any mechanism.

Only the innermost case is the one everybody pictures. The energy spreads outward through the ground from whatever was struck, which is why the mechanism covering the largest area is also the one that hurts the most people.

Why a house works, and the part of it that does not

A house is genuinely safe, with a condition attached that people skip. In the NWS formulation, a house is a safe place to be during a thunderstorm as long as you avoid anything that conducts electricity. That means staying off corded phones, electrical appliances, wires, TV cables, computers, plumbing, and metal doors and windows.8

Read alongside conduction, the list stops being arbitrary. A building protects you because its structure carries a strike around you and into the ground. The wiring and the pipes are part of how it does that, which makes them the last things in the house you want to be touching while it happens. The walls are the protection. The plumbing is the path.

This is why the shower question keeps coming up and why the answer is yes, it matters. You are not worried about the water. You are standing in bare feet, wet, holding onto metal fixtures connected to a pipe network that runs into the ground, which is an unusually good way to insert yourself into the circuit. The same logic covers washing dishes, and it is also why a cordless phone or a cell phone that is not plugged in is fine while a corded handset is not.

Shelters that are not shelters

Several things that feel like shelter offer none. A tent gives no protection from lightning at all, and the NWS is explicit that you should not take cover under beach picnic shelters or similar open-sided structures. What you need is something fully enclosed, which is why a park restroom building beats the pavilion next to it every time.9

On the water the split is just as sharp. The vast majority of lightning injuries and deaths on boats happen on small boats with no cabin, while large boats with cabins, especially those with properly installed lightning protection, are relatively safe.9

The common thread across all of it is enclosure and a path to ground that is not you. A roof by itself does nothing. Four walls and a structure that can carry the current somewhere else is the whole idea, and anything that only solves rain is solving the wrong problem.

What surviving a strike actually means

Lightning kills about 20 people a year in the United States and injures hundreds more, and some survivors suffer lifelong neurological damage.10

That second clause is the part the death toll hides, and it is why framing lightning risk around roughly twenty deaths a year is misleading. Most people struck by lightning live. Surviving is the common outcome rather than the miracle, and the question that actually matters is what the years afterwards look like.

The National Weather Service is blunt about that. Someone who avoids cardiac arrest at the moment of the strike may get away with muscle soreness, headache, nausea, mild confusion or balance problems that clear in a few days. The longer-term list is the one worth reading, because most survivors experience some of it: trouble coding new information and retrieving old information, difficulty multitasking, slower reaction time, distractibility, forgetfulness, irritability and personality change, headaches that do not respond to ordinary painkillers, chronic pain from nerve injury, ringing in the ears, and difficulty sleeping.11

Some of it arrives late, which makes it easy to attribute to something else. Personality changes and self-isolation, embarrassment at not being able to remember people, difficulty holding a conversation, and depression are all listed as delayed effects.11

Put plainly, this is a brain injury that happens to arrive by weather. Waiting out a storm indoors is not insurance against a rare death. It is avoiding a far more likely outcome in which you walk away, everyone says how lucky you were, and you spend the next decade explaining to people why you cannot concentrate, cannot sleep, and are not quite who you were.
