How Far Away Is Lightning? The Flash-to-Bang Rule

Count the seconds, divide by five, and know when a storm is close enough to hurt you.

The short answer

Count the seconds between the lightning flash and the thunder, then divide by five: that is the distance in miles, because sound travels about one mile every five seconds. A 10-second gap means the strike hit roughly two miles away. If the flash never brings any thunder at all, the storm is likely more than 10 miles off, which is all that heat lightning means. And if you can hear thunder, you are already within striking range.

Why do you see lightning but never hear the thunder?

You have almost certainly watched this happen. The horizon flickers on a warm evening, then flickers again, and you wait for a rumble that never comes. Most people call it heat lightning and file it away as something separate from the real thing, a light show with nothing behind it.

It is not separate, and there is plenty behind it. Heat lightning is not a type of lightning at all. It is ordinary lightning from a storm too far away for the sound to reach you. Thunder carries only about 10 miles from a flash while light carries much farther, so past that distance a storm goes silent while staying perfectly visible. Often you are not even seeing the bolt: the storm sits below the horizon, hidden by hills or the curve of the earth, and what reaches your eye is its flash bouncing off higher clouds.45

Some of that flickering was never headed for the ground anyway. There are five to ten times as many flashes inside and between clouds as there are flashes to the ground, which is why a distant storm can pulse for an hour without a single bolt you could point at. The ones that do come down carry something between 100 million and 1 billion volts.6

Here is the part worth carrying around. Silence is a distance reading, not an all-clear. Thunder fading out tells you the storm is probably more than 10 miles off, and a bolt from the blue can travel 10 to 15 miles from the cloud before it reaches the ground. Those two ranges overlap. A storm too quiet to hear can still be close enough to reach you, and storms move.2

How do you calculate how far away lightning is?

Light reaches your eyes almost instantly, but sound is slow. That gap is the whole trick. When you see a flash, start counting seconds until you hear the thunder, then divide by five. The result is the distance to the strike in miles, because thunder travels about one mile every five seconds.

Here’s what makes that sound in the first place: a lightning bolt can heat the air around it to about 50,000°F, roughly five times hotter than the surface of the sun, and that superheated air explodes outward as the shockwave you hear as thunder.7

A few worked examples make it concrete. The bigger the number, the farther the bolt, but a shrinking count means the storm is moving toward you.

  • Start on the flash: The moment you see lightning, begin counting: one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, and so on until the thunder arrives.
  • Divide by five: Seconds divided by five equals miles. 5 seconds is about 1 mile, 10 seconds is about 2 miles, 15 seconds is about 3 miles.
  • Watch the trend: If each count is shorter than the last, the storm is closing in. If the counts grow, it is moving away, but do not lower your guard yet.
  • No thunder to count means danger: If lightning and thunder arrive together, the strike is nearly on top of you. Get inside a substantial building or a hard-topped vehicle now.

What is the 30-30 rule, and when should you go inside?

The 30-30 rule turns flash-to-bang into a simple safety cutoff. If you count 30 seconds or fewer between the flash and the thunder, the lightning is within about six miles, close enough to be the next target. Stop what you are doing and get to shelter. That is the first 30.

The second 30 is the part people ignore. Wait a full 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder before going back out. Most lightning casualties happen at the start and the end of a storm, when the sky looks safe but is not.

This is where "bolt from the blue" comes in. Lightning can leave the top or side of a storm, travel sideways, and hit the ground as far as 10 miles from the rain, sometimes under a clear, blue sky. The National Weather Service puts the reach of these strikes at 10 to 15 miles from the storm. The rule of thumb behind all of it: if you can hear thunder, you are already close enough to be struck.

Lightning distance, translated into danger levels

A number on its own does not help anyone. What you want is a distance with a decision attached to it, so here is the whole range, from overhead to too far to hear, with what each band actually means for whether you should be outside.829

The six-mile line at the top of that list is worth trusting, because it does not come from one agency. It is where the National Weather Service’s flash-to-bang guidance lands, and it is also the operational rule American high schools run on: the National Federation of State High School Associations tells its members that when thunder is heard, or lightning is reported within six miles of an outdoor event, everyone should already be in a designated safe area. Two organisations with very different jobs, one answering to physics and the other to a field full of teenagers, arrived at the same number.10

Both spans start at the storm. Thunder gives out around ten miles; lightning keeps going to fifteen. The shaded band is the difference, and it is the part that reads as safe because you cannot hear anything.

So is a storm you cannot hear a safe storm?

No, and this is the single most useful thing to take away. Silence tells you the storm is probably beyond about 10 miles, because that is roughly as far as thunder carries. It does not tell you that you are out of range, because bolts from the blue reach 10 to 15 miles from the cloud. The distance where the sound gives up and the distance where the lightning gives up are not the same distance, and the gap between them is exactly where people get caught.42

The official guidance never asks you to estimate any of this under pressure. The National Weather Service position is that if you hear thunder you are likely within striking distance, and its advice for organized outdoor activity is to suspend play when you see lightning, hear thunder, or the sky simply looks threatening, whichever comes first. For anything with a crowd, a game or a job site, it also recommends that a specific person be designated to watch the weather, and that it not be the coach, umpire or referee, because the people running the event are the worst placed to call it off.98

The sports-medicine world reaches the same conclusion from the injury side. The National Athletic Trainers’ Association, in its position statement in the Journal of Athletic Training, tells organisations to suspend activity until 30 minutes after the last strike or rumble, to use a real-time lightning detection service that has been independently verified rather than guesswork, and to name in advance the one person with authority to pull everyone off the field. That last point is the one most groups skip, and it is the reason play continues in weather nobody present actually thinks is safe.11

That is the honest summary of the whole topic. There is no distance at which being outside in a thunderstorm is safe, only distances that buy you more or less time to stop being outside.

Where ZoneWatch’s alert radii fit

Ten miles is the one that maps onto official guidance. It covers the 6-to-10-mile threat zone and roughly the range where thunder would reach you anyway, so a 10-mile alert is an act-now alert: the storm is already close enough to strike where you are standing.

Twenty-five and fifty miles are not safety thresholds, and no agency publishes them as such. They exist to buy lead time, which is a different job. A 25-mile alert tells you a storm is close enough that decisions need making now, while you can still get a field cleared or a crew off a roof without rushing. Fifty miles is situational awareness, useful when you are responsible for an event, a commute or a site and want to know a storm exists in the region before it is anyone’s problem.

Used together they turn the ladder into something you do not have to count out by eye: the far radius tells you to start paying attention, and the near one tells you the time for deciding has passed.

One caveat belongs here even though it is about us. The NFHS warns schools that lightning apps and detection tools may lack accuracy about exactly where a strike landed and can lag by several minutes, and that using them should never override the basic rule of seeking shelter when you hear thunder or see lightning. That is correct, and it applies to ZoneWatch as much as to anything else. Detection buys you warning before the storm is close enough to hear. It does not replace your own eyes and ears once it is.10

What does it mean when a storm suddenly bursts with lightning?

Watch one storm for a while and the rhythm changes. A flash every minute or so becomes a burst of them, several in a few seconds, the whole cloud strobing. It is easy to read that as the storm spending itself. It usually means the opposite.

The surge has a name. Researchers call a sudden climb in a storm’s total flash rate a lightning jump, and it tracks a pulse in the updraft, the column of rising air that also grows hail and can tighten into a tornado. NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory has found these rapid increases in total lightning often show up tens of minutes before severe weather arrives at the ground, and forecasters now run an automated lightning jump algorithm to catch them.12

You do not need the algorithm to use the idea. If the flashes are speeding up rather than spacing out, the storm is strengthening, and that is the moment to stop watching and get inside.

How do weather apps measure the real distance to a strike?

Flash-to-bang is a great backup, but it only works when you can both see the flash and hear the thunder. At night, indoors, in wind and rain, or when strikes come every few seconds, counting falls apart fast. That is where sensor networks beat eyeballing it.

Lightning detection networks pick up the radio pulse each strike gives off and triangulate its exact location. Apps built on that data can tell you precisely how far the nearest strike is and which direction it came from, without you looking at the sky at all.
